The Conservatorium is a exhibition of artworks in jars. The show is made up of contributions from 80 invited artists, all of whom were given the brief that their work must be at least partially contained within a glass, plastic or ceramic jar.
The Conservatorium emanates a curious atmosphere that’s somewhere between the scientific laboratory and the kitchen cupboard. Both a spatial constraint and means to prepare for the future, a jar operates as a tiny representation of time and space. The invited artists have thoroughly explored the potentials of this humble object and the resulting ideas are fascinating, both as insightful artworks and as striking deviations of each artist’s practice. Together these 80 artworks resonate as an industrious investigation into containment, seeing and preserving.
Curated by Anna Dunnill and Renae Coles, The Conservatorium is the first exhibition to take place in Perth’s newest ARI, Paper Mountain. The Conservatorium is a part of FRINGE WORLD Festival, Perth 2012.
